I will be honest: I still love reading tarot in person.
There is something powerful about sitting across from someone, looking into their eyes and noticing the small changes that happen as the cards begin to speak. I can feel when a message lands. I can see when someone remembers something they had buried or recognizes a truth they have been trying not to name.
In person, I can hold the room around them.
For a long time, I assumed something essential would be lost when a tarot reading moved online. How could the same connection exist through a screen? How could someone choose their cards when the deck was in my hands, perhaps thousands of miles away?
Then I began offering online tarot readings—and I discovered that the connection was not lost. It simply took a different form.
Online readings can be surprisingly intimate, focused and even magical. I still hold space for the person in front of me. I still create ritual. We still choose the cards together. The screen does not have to become a wall between us; it can become a window.
So, are online tarot readings accurate?
Yes, an online tarot reading can be just as meaningful and accurate as an in-person reading.
The depth of a reading does not depend entirely on two people occupying the same physical room. It depends on the reader's experience, the client's willingness to be present, the questions being explored and the conversation that develops around the cards.
But we should also be clear about what "accurate" means.
For me, tarot is not about proving that magic can travel through Wi-Fi. It is not a performance in which I announce a fixed future while you sit silently and wait for fate to be delivered.
Tarot is a way of tapping into the psyche and the subconscious.
The cards become prompts. They stir memories, emotions, reactions and stories. One image may remind you of a relationship. Another may reveal the fear beneath a decision. A third may illuminate a pattern you keep repeating without understanding why.
My work is to weave those messages together, one card at a time, until we can see the story your subconscious may already be telling—and what that story is creating in your life.
Once you can see where your thoughts, habits and energy are flowing, you can decide whether to continue in that direction or redirect yourself toward something different.
That is where the real accuracy of tarot lives: in recognition.
Creating a sacred space for an online reading
Because I love ritual, I do not approach an online reading as if it were an ordinary video call.
Before we meet, I prepare the room where I will be reading. I clear away distractions and energetically cleanse the space.
Living in Mexico, I often burn copal resin, an aromatic tree resin with a long history of ceremonial use across Mesoamerica. Its scent immediately signals that we are stepping out of ordinary time and into a more intentional space.
Depending on my mood, I may use a sage bundle instead.
I light candles and create warmth around the reading table, but I never make the room so dark that I cannot clearly see the cards. Atmosphere matters, but so does being able to read the beautiful details in the imagery. I like the light to feel soft, warm and alive.
Before an online session, I encourage my client to create a space of their own.
You do not need an elaborate altar or a room filled with crystals. Choose somewhere you can sit comfortably and speak without being interrupted. Light a candle if you have one. Use a little essential oil or incense if those scents help you relax. Place your feet on the ground and allow yourself to arrive.
The ritual begins on both sides of the screen.
How I prepare and clear the tarot deck
Before laying down any cards, I consecrate the deck for the person I am about to read.
I knock on the deck three times.
For me, this symbolically clears the energy of anyone who may have previously touched the cards and marks the beginning of a new reading. Whatever came before is released. This deck, this moment and this conversation now belong to the person sitting with me.
I then ask my client to take several slow, cleansing breaths.
If you have an essential oil that helps you feel calm, you may breathe in its aroma gently. The purpose is not to force yourself into a mystical state. It is simply to settle your nervous system, become present and step away from the noise of the day.
Then I ask you to place your hands over your heart, keep your feet grounded and say your full birth name—first, middle and last—three times.
This is not a test, and nothing terrible will happen if you stumble over a name or need to start again. It is an act of presence: a way of saying, "I am here. This reading is for me. I am willing to meet myself honestly."
How do you choose tarot cards online?
This is one of the most common questions people ask about virtual tarot readings.
During our session, I position my phone or camera so you can see the deck clearly. I begin laying the cards down and fanning them across the table one by one.
Although the physical cards are in front of me, I want you to feel connected to the process of choosing them. I do not want it to feel as though I have selected a random collection of cards and simply announced their meanings to you.
I place my left hand over the cards and ask you to fan your own hand through the space in front of you as though the deck were physically there.
Then I slowly move my hand across the cards.
I ask you to tell me when to stop.
You may notice a tingle in your fingertips, a sense of warmth, a tiny pull of attention or simply a clear internal "there." You do not have to feel something dramatic. Sometimes you will just know when you want me to stop.
That is enough.
We repeat the process as we choose each card together. Then the reading begins.
Can you connect with tarot cards through a screen?
I believe connection begins with attention.
When you place your hands over your heart, speak your name, breathe and participate in choosing the cards, you are no longer passively watching someone perform a reading. You are part of the ritual.
The online format may even help some people become more open. You are sitting in your own chosen space, perhaps wrapped in a blanket with your candle burning beside you. You do not have to travel or enter an unfamiliar room. You can allow difficult emotions to surface somewhere that already feels like home.
Being online also asks us to become more deliberate. We cannot depend only on physical proximity. We create the connection through voice, eye contact, attention, intention and conversation.
It is a different way of holding space, but I still hold it.
Tarot as a conversation with your subconscious
I sometimes describe tarot as therapeutic—not because it replaces therapy or because a tarot reader should pretend to be a licensed mental-health professional.
It feels therapeutic because the cards give us somewhere to begin.
In traditional therapy, you may sit down while someone waits for you to explain what is on your mind. With tarot, the cards arrive as visual prompts and talking points. They can trigger a memory, reaction, realization or story before you consciously know what you need to discuss.
A card depicting surrender may reveal how exhausted you are from trying to control everything. A card about conflict may remind you of the conversation you keep avoiding. A card associated with beginnings may make you realize that you are not afraid of failure—you are afraid of allowing yourself to want something new.
The cards offer the thread.
You bring the life experience attached to it.
My role is to listen, notice the patterns and weave the individual messages into a larger story. Together, we explore what your subconscious may be communicating and where your present thoughts, choices and intentions are carrying you.
Tarot can be reflective and emotionally meaningful, but it is not a replacement for qualified medical, psychological, legal or financial care.
Does an accurate tarot reading predict the future?
Sometimes tarot appears to describe future events with startling accuracy. I have witnessed moments in readings that seemed to make sense only later.
But I do not believe your future is carved into stone.
The cards can reveal the direction of your current path. They may show where a relationship appears to be moving, what a repeated behavior is likely to create or which possibility is receiving most of your attention and energy.
That is not the same as saying nothing can change.
If the cards reveal a path you do not want, awareness gives you an opportunity to redirect it. You can make a different decision, have the conversation, set the boundary or stop feeding the pattern.
A meaningful tarot reading does not take your power away by declaring an unavoidable future. It helps return your power by allowing you to see the future you may currently be creating.
What makes an online tarot reading feel accurate?
Several things contribute to the depth and accuracy of an online reading:
A present and experienced reader
A good reader does more than recite definitions. They listen to how the cards relate to one another and to the person's real circumstances.
A meaningful question
You do not need a perfectly worded question, but honesty helps. "What am I refusing to see about this relationship?" will often open a richer conversation than "Will they text me?"
Your willingness to participate
An online reading becomes more powerful when you engage with what comes up rather than waiting for the reader to perform certainty.
A calm, private environment
Choose a space where you can hear, speak freely and stay present without checking messages or answering the door.
Ethical expectations
Tarot is most useful when it supports reflection and choice. Be cautious of anyone who relies on fear, guarantees an outcome or tells you that only they can remove a curse or solve your problem.
How should you prepare for an online tarot reading?
Before your session:
- Choose a quiet, comfortable place.
- Check your internet connection and camera.
- Bring a candle, incense or essential oil if you enjoy ritual.
- Have water nearby.
- Keep a journal and pen within reach.
- Think about what has been occupying your mind.
- Come with a question—or simply come open.
- Give yourself a little quiet time afterward if possible.
You do not need to arrive calm, certain or spiritually polished. You can arrive confused. You can arrive skeptical. You can arrive carrying a question you are afraid to say out loud.
That is often where the most honest readings begin.
Online versus in-person tarot readings
I still prefer certain elements of reading in person. I love sharing the same physical space, looking directly into someone's eyes and feeling the atmosphere of the room change as the cards unfold.
But online readings have shown me that intimacy is not limited by geography.
An online reading allows us to meet across countries, time zones and different chapters of life. You can remain in your own sacred space while I hold mine here in Mexico. We create a bridge between them and meet over the cards.
In-person and online readings are different experiences, but different does not mean lesser.
Both can be deep. Both can be emotional. Both can reveal something true.
Trust the process
If you are wondering whether an online tarot reading can really work, I understand. I once wondered the same thing.
Then I watched people recognize themselves in the cards from thousands of miles away. I saw emotion rise through a screen. I saw the exact moment when a collection of separate images became one coherent story—and that story gave someone language for what they had been carrying.
So take a breath. Create your space. Light your candle. Place your hands over your heart.
You do not have to believe that tarot is magic.
You only have to be willing to listen to what the cards awaken inside you.
Trust the process—not because the cards control your future, but because they may help you see the path you are creating and remind you that you still have the power to choose where it leads.

Frequently asked questions
Are online tarot readings as accurate as in-person readings?
They can be. The quality of a reading depends more on the reader, the client's participation, the questions and the interpretation of the cards than on physical proximity.
How can I choose cards when the reading is online?
During my readings, you can see the deck through the camera. I fan out the cards and invite you to guide my hand, telling me when to stop for each selection.
Do I need to prepare a question?
No. You may bring a particular question, a situation you want to understand or simply a willingness to explore what is present in your life.
Do I need to believe in tarot?
No. Curiosity and openness are enough. I approach tarot as a reflective language that helps us access patterns, memories and subconscious material.
Can tarot guarantee what will happen?
No. Tarot may illuminate the direction of your current choices and patterns, but it should not be used to promise a fixed future. Your decisions still matter.
Is tarot the same as therapy?
No. Tarot can feel reflective or therapeutic, but it is not psychotherapy and does not replace professional mental-health care.
