The Dreamer

Major Arcana 0 — the Mama Blue Tarot deck's own name for The Fool

In my deck, I call The Fool The Dreamer.

I never felt that "The Fool" truly captured the beautiful energy of this card. To me, this person is not foolish at all. The Dreamer is someone standing at the beginning of a new chapter, willing to step forward before every detail has been explained.

There is something wonderfully brave about that.

The Dreamer carries the energy we have before fear starts presenting its long list of reasons why something might not work. It is the part of us that still believes in possibility — the part willing to travel, create, fall in love, begin again or follow an idea simply because something inside us says, Go.

What The Dreamer Means in a Tarot Reading

When The Dreamer appears, life may be inviting you beyond what is familiar.

You might be considering a new relationship, career, home, journey or version of yourself. You may not know exactly where the road leads, but you can feel that remaining where you are no longer feels right.

This card does not promise that every step will be easy. It asks whether you are willing to trust yourself enough to take the first one.

There is an important difference between trusting life and ignoring reality. The Dreamer is open, but not careless. She listens to her intuition while keeping her eyes on the path. She understands that faith and awareness can walk together.

Sometimes this card arrives when you have spent so long analyzing a decision that your mind has built a fence around your heart. The Dreamer gently reminds you that certainty is rarely available at the beginning. Sometimes clarity only comes after you begin moving.

The Dreamer in Love

In a love reading, The Dreamer can represent the freshness of a new connection — the excitement of meeting someone without knowing where the story will lead.

It can also appear when an established relationship needs more spontaneity. Perhaps love has become dominated by responsibilities, routines and practical conversations. The card may be asking you to become curious about one another again.

If you are looking for love, The Dreamer encourages openness without abandoning discernment. Release the idea that love must arrive in one particular package. The person who surprises you may not resemble the person you imagined.

If you are single and content, this card celebrates your freedom. It may be a season for discovering who you are when you are not trying to fulfil someone else's expectations.

The Dreamer in Work and Purpose

In career readings, The Dreamer often appears around a new venture, creative project or unexpected opportunity.

You may feel inexperienced, but inexperience is not always a disadvantage. It can allow you to approach something with imagination rather than inherited limitations.

This does not mean quitting your job tomorrow and hoping the universe handles your electricity bill. It means giving the dream a real place in your life. Research it. Make the call. Take the course. Create the first page. Begin before you feel entirely ready.

Every meaningful creation once existed as an idea that could have been dismissed.

When The Dreamer Represents a Person

The Dreamer may describe someone adventurous, unconventional and naturally optimistic. This person may love travel, new experiences and the feeling of beginning again.

They can be inspiring because they remind others that life is larger than routine. They may also struggle with planning, consistency or recognizing consequences before taking action.

If this person has entered your life, ask what they are awakening in you. Perhaps they are not meant to give you stability. Perhaps they are here to remind you that you are still alive.

When The Dreamer Is a Quality to Embody

Sometimes the card does not represent another person. It represents a quality you need to reclaim.

You may need to become:

You do not need to know the entire route. You only need to recognize the next honest step.

The Shadow of The Dreamer

Every card contains a full spectrum of energy.

The Dreamer's openness can become avoidance when enthusiasm replaces responsibility. Trust can become wishful thinking. Freedom can become a refusal to commit.

When this energy is out of balance, you may be rushing forward without examining the facts — or repeatedly beginning new things without staying long enough to build anything.

The question is not simply, should I take the leap? It is also, have I listened carefully enough to understand what this leap requires of me?

A dream becomes powerful when inspiration is joined by intention.

Mama Blue Guidance

The Dreamer reminds you that you are not required to remain loyal to an identity you have outgrown.

You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to choose a new direction. You are allowed to begin again, even when other people do not understand why.

But take your awareness with you.

Trust the quiet voice beneath the excitement. Let intuition guide you, preparation support you and experience teach you. You do not need a guarantee before moving forward. You need enough self-trust to know that whatever you meet, you will respond.

The path may not reveal itself all at once.

That does not mean there is no path.

Journal Prompts

The Dreamer is the sacred beginning — the moment before the story has decided what it will become.

Stand at the edge. Take a breath. Look carefully.

Then, when the moment feels true, step forward.

Blue's Story

I know this card because I lived it.

I moved to Tulum on a whim and a feeling, with $1,000 in my bank account and no plan beyond the one my heart had already made. I came for love. I came convinced that a thousand dollars could stretch a whole lot further than a thousand dollars actually stretches. It couldn't. But here is what the Dreamer knows that the accountant never will: as the money ran out, my dreamer energy did not.

So I tried everything. I busked on the street. I sold handmade jewelry on the beach, and when that didn't pay, I sold homemade energy balls to anyone who would stop walking. I taught kids English. I taught my very first yoga class and was paid eight dollars for it — eight whole dollars — and I was thrilled. I became a raw-food chef for wealthy people who wanted their meals prepped just so. I did it all. And I did every bit of it without fear of failing.

That is the true Dreamer energy. Not the absence of an empty bank account — the absence of fear about it. The Dreamer doesn't wait for the map. She steps off the ledge trusting the ground will rise to meet her, and somehow, again and again, it does.

The rest of that story — how it began, and where it led — lives in the pages of my memoir.
