The Message Finds You:
How Tarot Really Works

If tarot is a mirror, the question I hear next is always the same: but how does it actually work? How can a shuffled deck, or a reading done through a screen a thousand miles away, possibly land on the exact message I needed to hear today?

Here is what I've come to believe, after all these years of sitting with the cards.

It isn't the deck that finds you. It's you who finds the message.

Your energy does the drawing

We tend to think a reading works from the outside in — that some force out there decides which card you get. I've come to see it the other way around. The pull comes from within you. Your subconscious, the deep knowing part of you that notices far more than your busy mind ever admits, guides your hand to the card it needs you to see.

You reach for the one that's "just calling to you." A card slips loose and falls from the deck while you shuffle. In a virtual reading, you feel drawn to the third pile instead of the first. However it happens, it isn't random — it's your own energy reaching for the truth it's ready to meet. The information wants to come to you. It has only ever been waiting for you to be open enough to receive it.

That's why distance doesn't weaken a reading, and why the "how" of the shuffle doesn't matter. The message travels on your energy, not on the cards.

The vessel changes. The truth doesn't.

This is also why the same magic shows up in so many different traditions. The tool is never really the point — it's just the cup you pour your knowing into.

The cards you feel drawn to choose. The card that leaps out of the deck as if it couldn't wait. The lines and creases pressed into your palms, telling the story of a life. The tea leaves settling into shapes at the bottom of a cup. And here in Mexico, the limpia — the shamanic egg ritual — where you hold an egg close, let it gather what you've been carrying, then crack it into a glass of water and read the shapes that rise: the threads, the peaks, the clouded places, each one whispering about what's ready to move through you.

Different vessels, every one of them. But the same quiet mechanism underneath. You bring the energy. The vessel gives it a shape you can finally see.

What the message comes to do

When you let it in, the reading does three things, always with love.

It teaches you something — a truth you hadn't yet let yourself understand. It affirms something — a knowing you already carried but doubted, now reflected back so you can trust it. And sometimes it challenges you — gently pressing on the place you've been avoiding, the pattern you keep circling, the thing you're being pulled toward that was never really meant for you.

None of it is there to frighten you. That's the part I most want you to hear. So many people are afraid of the cards, bracing for bad news, waiting to be told something terrible. But a reading isn't a threat. It's a hand on your shoulder.

Let it be a gentle story

When you stop fearing tarot and start letting it teach you, it becomes something tender — a gentle story the universe is telling you about your own life. A story about how to make the change you've been circling. How to grow more fully into yourself. How to move toward your greatest purpose, and how to lovingly step away from what is not yours to carry, even when some old pull keeps tugging you back toward it.

The cards won't force you anywhere. They'll simply show you the path and trust you to walk it.

So the next time a card calls to you, or falls from the deck, or an egg clouds a certain way in the water — don't brace yourself. Soften instead. Open your hands. The message was always yours. It's only ever been waiting for you to be ready to receive it.
